Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (Rehab)
Conservative Management

Conservative (or non-surgical) management of sports-related injuries most often includes rest and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation and pain. Rest involves the elimination of those activities to the joint or extremity that are symptomatic or painful. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (or NSAIDs), over-the-counter medications, or an injection into a joint may also be utilized for relief of pain and inflammation. Your family physician, or Dr. Ahlfeld, will be able to suggest or prescribe the most appropriate form of medication for each patient's particular condition. A program of rehabilitation or therapy may be started at this time as well to improve strength and stability.
If the symptoms persist, then the use of a splint or brace to stabilize or immobilize the involved joint may be indicated. Physical therapy and rehabilitation in a conservative management program play an important role in the healing process. This rehabilitation promotes joint strength, flexibility, and endurance. Once the compromised joint has returned to a near-normal state and rehabilitation has been achieved, a continuing rehab program may be indicated to maintain joint strength.

Keep in mind, that in some instances, a joint may not be able to reach a state of full recovery and stability by rehabilitation alone. Dr. Ahlfeld will be able to explain the prognosis and possible limitations of this non-operative approach.

Rehabilitation Following Surgery

Following traditional or arthroscopic surgery, a physical therapy rehabilitation program will begin under the direction of Dr. Ahlfeld and a skilled therapist. Initially, passive motion exercises are begun to keep the joint mobile and reduce adhesions.
Following this passive motion program, a more aggressive active motion program is utilized to strengthen the injured extremity or joint, and acclimate each patient to the vigors of daily activities. The modalities used to progressively strengthen the patient will vary depending on the area involved and extent of rehabilitation necessary. These rehab programs are custom-designed for each patient's physical ability, individual strength and condition, and particular type of surgery.
