If The Shoe Fits....
With the 2003 Indianapolis Life 500 Festival Mini-Marathon just aroundthe corner, training is kicking into high gear. As you prepare for this years 13.1-mile race, the most important piece of equipment you need is a good pair of running shoes.
If the Minis not on your calendar - but weekend walks are - having the right shoes is still key.
"The best place to find the perfect shoe is at a reputable running shoe store," says Steven Ahlfeld, M.D., a sports medicine physician with St.Vincent Sports Medicine.
"They can help with selecting a shoe that meets your needs." Manufacturers create shoes for most foot types: Normal arches need a stabilizing shoe; high-arched runners need a cushioned shoe; and motion-control shoes are best for those with flat feet.
Next, its important to have your foot strike-analyzed. Thats the term used to describe how your foot hits the ground - either heel, forefoot or mid-foot first. Your stride pattern should also be reviewed. A specialist may also want to see where the wear and tear have occurred in the past, so bring an old pair of shoes with you.
"Be sure to try on shoes at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen," Dr. Ahlfeld says. "Try on both shoes, wear athletic socks and take a quick run to test the general feel of the shoe."
Finally, be sure to break in your new shoes. Ahlfeld concludes, "Give yourself four to six weeks in the shoes before running long distances like the Mini. Then go bring home the gold!"
