Dr. Ahlfeld’s Biography
Steven K. Ahlfeld, M.D., has been in private practice in Indianapolis as an orthopaedic surgeon since 1984. During that time he has become a recognized leader in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. Many of Dr. Ahlfeld's patients are competitive or recreational athletes, who have suffered some type of sports-related injury.

Dr. Ahlfeld's Credential Include:

• Board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist.

• A pioneer in the development of advanced arthroscopic surgical techniques.

• Orthopaedic team surgeon for the Indiana University basketball team.

• Has performed surgery on numerous professional and scholastic athletes and first round draft picks.

• Dedicated to getting men and women of all ages back in their game.


Dr. Ahlfeld knows what it takes to be a competitive athlete. As a college student, he was a member of Indiana University's basketball team, and was a member of three consecutive Big Ten Championship Teams.

In 1996, Dr. Ahlfeld was honored to be named to the Indiana University Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team.



Dr. Ahlfeld continues to serve as Orthopaedic Team Surgeon for the Indiana University Basketball Team. He also works with a number of area high schools and colleges as their orthopaedic team physician. As a sports medicine specialist, he provides care to some of the finest competitive and recreational athletes in the state.

Following graduation from Indiana University, Dr. Ahlfeld attended Indiana University School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1979. After completing his orthopaedic surgery residency training at Indiana University, Dr. Ahlfeld received his specialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the University of Oregon. His research interests during his fellowship training included knee ligament injuries and other common Sports Medicine conditions.



Dr. Ahlfeld is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is a member of the Indiana State Medical Association, as well as numerous other societies and professional associations.

Dr. Ahlfeld has spoken at national and international meetings on various aspects of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery. He has authored several articles and scientific papers on sports-related injuries and general orthopaedic topics. He has served on a national expert panel on the topic of basketball injuries presented by the American College of Sports Medicine. He also served as Chief Medical Officer for the Pan American Games in Indianapolis.

Dr. Ahlfeld and his wife Helen have two sons, Adam and Chris. In his leisure time, Dr. Ahlfeld enjoys spending time with his family and working with various youth and church organizations.
